GLP-1 side effects: common questions
Which GLP-1 has the most nausea?
Among these labels, the highest printed nausea rate is Wegovy (44%, placebo 16%) and the lowest is Mounjaro (18%, placebo 4%). These come from separate trials in different people, doses and lengths of treatment, so they are not a head-to-head ranking.
Do GLP-1s cause cancer?
Every GLP-1 label here carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors, which were seen in rodents, and says their relevance to people has not been determined. The labels say anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, or MEN 2, should not take it. Each brand's page gives its label's exact wording.
Are GLP-1s safe long term?
The long trials ran for years, not decades. SELECT followed 17,604 people on semaglutide 2.4 mg or placebo for a mean of about 40 months, and SURMOUNT-1 followed tirzepatide to week 176. What happens over longer spans is not yet known from randomized trials, and labels keep being revised as reports come in. FDA's reports and each label's warnings are on each brand's page.
Can you compare GLP-1 side effects across brands?
Only with care. Each rate comes from that brand's own trials, in its own population, dose and duration, and each is reported against its own placebo group. The placebo column shows how much of a rate happens without the medicine. A direct comparison needs a head-to-head trial, which the evidence page lists where one exists.
Why do the same brand's rates differ between type 2 diabetes and weight loss?
Trials in weight management use higher doses and different people than trials in diabetes, and report side effects differently. That is why Ozempic and Wegovy, both semaglutide, print different rates in their labels.
