Can teens and children take a GLP-1?

FDA has approved Wegovy, Trulicity, Saxenda, Victoza and Mounjaro for this, in the words of each label below. STEP TEENS (Semaglutide): At week 68, BMI fell 16.1% on semaglutide against a rise of 0.6% on placebo in adolescents with obesity. Stomach side effects were more common (62% against 42%), and 4% on semaglutide had gallstones against none on placebo. ClinicalTrials.gov lists 65 trials of these medicines on it: 19 with posted results and 20 recruiting now.

The registry

Trials on teens and children, by medicine

A trial counts when the registry's conditions or title name this, and some study a related question, such as insulin sensitivity in people with the condition. A registered trial shows a question being asked, not that the answer is yes.

Questions

GLP-1s and teens and children: common questions

What did the largest trial on teens and children find?

STEP TEENS (Semaglutide, 201 people): At week 68, BMI fell 16.1% on semaglutide against a rise of 0.6% on placebo in adolescents with obesity. Stomach side effects were more common (62% against 42%), and 4% on semaglutide had gallstones against none on placebo.

Is any GLP-1 FDA approved for teens and children?

Yes: Wegovy, Trulicity, Saxenda, Victoza and Mounjaro. Wegovy's label: to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction long term in: adults and pediatric patients aged 12 years and older with obesity; adults with overweight in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbid condition.

Does insurance cover a GLP-1 for teens and children?

Plans decide, and they usually tie coverage to a medicine's approved uses, so Wegovy, Trulicity, Saxenda, Victoza and Mounjaro are the place to start. Ask your plan whether it covers the medicine for this diagnosis and whether it needs prior authorization.

Which GLP-1 has been studied most for teens and children?

Semaglutide, with 24 registered trials on it, then Liraglutide with 14. More trials do not mean better results: read what each posted.

Can I join a trial of a GLP-1 for teens and children?

20 trials are recruiting on ClinicalTrials.gov now, listed below with their registry pages, which name each site and who can enroll.
