Research peptides and buying abroad: what FDA says

A vial sold "for research" is neither FDA-approved nor compounded for a patient. FDA says companies have illegally sold these medicines falsely labeled "for research purposes" or "not for human consumption", and it urges consumers not to buy them. 17 of its warning letters since 2024 quote labels like these, the newest dated Aug 24, 2026. With a prescription, sellers publish compounded tirzepatide from ≈ $158 per 30 days and compounded semaglutide from $99 per 30 days.

Three things sold under the same name

All three can say semaglutide or tirzepatide. They are not the same.

  • FDA-approved

Reviewed by FDA for safety, effectiveness and quality before it is sold, and needs a prescription.

    Prices of the FDA-approved brands

  • Compounded by a pharmacy

Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved: the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are marketed.

  • Sold “for research”

FDA calls these unapproved drugs. "These products have been sold directly to consumers for human use with dosing instructions."

What arrived when researchers bought them

6 products ordered without a prescription from online sellers, 3 received and tested. It shows what can arrive, not how often.

  • “Three vendors selling Ozempic injections engaged in nondelivery scams requesting extra payments (range, US $650-$1200) to purportedly clear customs, confirmed as fraudulent by customs agencies.”
  • “LC-MS revealed the presence of semaglutide in all samples, but with considerably lower purity levels (7%-14% vs advertised 99%).”
  • “The measured semaglutide content substantially exceeded the labeled amount in each sample by 29% to 39%, meaning that users could receive up to 39% more semaglutide per injection.”
  • “Study limitations include limited sample of products tested due to nondelivery scams.”

Bacteriostatic water and peptide calculators

FDA cites these kits as evidence against the seller. To one it wrote: “you market bacteriostatic water as a solvent for reconstituting your products, thus, providing the means to prepare an injectable drug for human administration.” FDA's letter. To another: “you market bacteriostatic water alongside a “peptide calculator,” a resource that provides the means to prepare an injectable drug for human administration.” FDA's letter. If your vial came from a pharmacy with a prescription, your dose in units comes from the strength on its label.

Buying abroad, including Mexico

Other countries' prices can be lower. Bringing the medicine home is a separate question.

“In most circumstances, it is illegal for individuals to import drugs or devices into the U.S. for personal use because these products purchased from other countries often have not been approved by the FDA for use and sale in the U.S.”

“If a drug is approved for use in another country but is an unapproved new drug in the U.S. it is illegal to import.”

“The FDA cannot ensure the safety and effectiveness of medicine purchased over the Internet from foreign sources, storefront businesses that offer to buy foreign medicine for you, or during trips outside the U.S.” FDA lists narrow situations where its staff may allow a personal supply. Common questions

Are research peptides legal to buy?

FDA says the companies selling them act illegally: "FDA has warned companies that have illegally sold unapproved drugs containing semaglutide, tirzepatide, retatrutide, survodutide or mazdutide that are falsely labeled “for research purposes” or “not for human consumption.”" It adds: "These products have been sold directly to consumers for human use with dosing instructions." and "The agency urges consumers not to purchase these products which are of unknown quality and may be harmful to their health." This is not legal advice about any one purchase. FDA's page

Is a research-grade vial the same as compounded tirzepatide or semaglutide?

No. A compounded medicine is made by a pharmacy for a patient's prescription, and it is not FDA-approved either. FDA's advice: "Patients should obtain a prescription from their doctor and fill the prescription at a state-licensed pharmacy." A vial labeled for research comes with neither. What compounded means

Where can I buy the cheapest tirzepatide or semaglutide peptide?

We list no seller of research-labeled vials. The lowest prices we read from sellers that work through a prescription: compounded tirzepatide from ≈ $158 per 30 days and compounded semaglutide from $99 per 30 days, each read on the seller's own page. Compounded prices from every seller

What did lab tests of these vials find?

One published study bought 6 products from online sellers without a prescription. "Of 6 products purchased, only 3 were received." "LC-MS revealed the presence of semaglutide in all samples, but with considerably lower purity levels (7%-14% vs advertised 99%)." "The measured semaglutide content substantially exceeded the labeled amount in each sample by 29% to 39%, meaning that users could receive up to 39% more semaglutide per injection." That is three vials, so it shows what can arrive, not how often. Ashraf AR, et al. JAMA Network Open, August 2024

Do you need bacteriostatic water or a peptide calculator?

The compounded sellers we read describe vials that arrive ready to use, with the strength on the label. FDA cites these kits against research sellers: "you market bacteriostatic water alongside a “peptide calculator,” a resource that provides the means to prepare an injectable drug for human administration." Compounded doses in mg and units

Can you buy retatrutide?

Not as an approved medicine. FDA says: "Retatrutide and cagrilintide cannot be used in compounding under federal law." and "Additionally, these are not components of FDA-approved drugs and have not been found safe and effective for any condition." 13 of the letters below name it. What is still in trials

Can you buy Mounjaro, Zepbound or Ozempic in Mexico or online from abroad?

Buying is one question and bringing it home is another. FDA says: "In most circumstances, it is illegal for individuals to import drugs or devices into the U.S. for personal use because these products purchased from other countries often have not been approved by the FDA for use and sale in the U.S." and "The FDA cannot ensure the safety and effectiveness of medicine purchased over the Internet from foreign sources, storefront businesses that offer to buy foreign medicine for you, or during trips outside the U.S." We do not track current prices abroad. How do I check a seller is legal?

FDA says to "only purchase from state-licensed pharmacies." A legal route starts with a prescription, and its BeSafeRx page lets you look up an online pharmacy. Our seller pages show what we found on each listed seller. Every FDA warning letter since 2024
