From each FDA label

Can you take a GLP-1 while breastfeeding?

Wegovy and Rybelsus/Ozempic tablets advise against breastfeeding on the tablets, because SNAC, an ingredient in them, reaches breast milk. Wegovy, Rybelsus/Ozempic tablets, Zepbound and Mounjaro cite a small study measuring the medicine in breast milk. Ozempic, Foundayo, Trulicity, Saxenda, Victoza and Byetta have no data on the medicine in human milk.

What each label says about breastfeeding

Sentences from each label, in its own words. Only cross-references are removed.

Wegovy

  • Data from a clinical lactation study with semaglutide oral tablet formulation reported semaglutide concentrations below the lower limit of quantification in human milk.
  • However, SNAC and/or its metabolites are present in human milk.
  • Because of the unknown potential for serious adverse reactions in the breastfed infant due to the possible accumulation of SNAC, and because there are alternative formulations of semaglutide that do not contain SNAC that can be used during lactation, advise patients that breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Wegovy tablets.
  • There are no data on the presence of subcutaneously administered semaglutide or its metabolites in human milk, the effects on the breastfed infant, or the effects on milk production.

Ozempic

  • There are no data on the presence of semaglutide in human milk, the effects on the breastfed infant, or the effects on milk production.
  • The developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding should be considered along with the mother’s clinical need for Ozempic and any potential adverse effects on the breastfed infant from Ozempic or from the underlying maternal condition.

Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets

  • A clinical lactation study reported semaglutide concentrations below the lower limit of quantification in human breast milk.
  • However, SNAC and/or its metabolites are present in human milk.
  • Because of the unknown potential for serious adverse reactions in the breastfed infant due to the possible accumulation of SNAC, and because there are alternative semaglutide products that do not contain SNAC that can be used during lactation, advise patients that breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Rybelsus or Ozempic tablets.

Zepbound

  • In a single-dose clinical lactation study, the concentration of tirzepatide in breast milk was found to be either undetectable or low compared to the maternal administered dose.
  • There are no available data on the effects of tirzepatide on the breastfed infant or on milk production.
  • The developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding should be considered along with the mother's clinical need for Zepbound and any potential adverse effects on the breastfed infant from Zepbound or from the underlying maternal condition.
  • The cumulative amount of tirzepatide detected in the remaining 7 breast milk samples over the 28-day sampling window was equivalent to less than 0.02% of the maternal administered dose, with the last measurable concentrations occurring 5 days post-dose.

  • In a single-dose clinical lactation study, the concentration of tirzepatide in breast milk was found to be either undetectable or low compared to the maternal administered dose.
  • There are no available data on the effects of tirzepatide on the breastfed infant or on milk production.
  • The developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding should be considered along with the mother's clinical need for Mounjaro and any potential adverse effects on the breastfed infant from Mounjaro or from the underlying maternal condition.
  • The cumulative amount of tirzepatide detected in the remaining 7 breast milk samples over the 28-day sampling window was equivalent to less than 0.02% of the maternal administered dose, with the last measurable concentrations occurring 5 days post-dose.

  • When a drug is present in animal milk, it is likely that the drug will be present in human milk.
  • The developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding should be considered along with the mother's clinical need for Foundayo and any potential adverse effects on the breastfed child from Foundayo or from the underlying maternal condition.

  • The presence of dulaglutide in milk of treated lactating animals was not determined.
  • The developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding should be considered along with the mother's clinical need for Trulicity and any potential adverse effects on the breastfed infant from Trulicity or from the underlying maternal condition.
